Use the VPS console, power controls and metrics · Galaxium Hosting help
Start, stop and restart your VPS, open a terminal in your browser, and check CPU and memory use.
Your server's Overview has the power buttons, and its menu has the Console. What you see depends on your plan: if a button or page isn't there, your server doesn't offer it.
Power controls
The power buttons are at the top of the Overview:
- Start turns a stopped server on.
- Stop shuts the operating system down cleanly. Everything on the server goes offline until you start it again.
- Restart reboots the server. Expect a short break while your services come back.
- Force stop (under ⋯, where offered) cuts the power at once, like pulling the plug. Unsaved data is lost. Use it only if Stop doesn't work.
You confirm each one in a pop-up. While the server is changing state, the page says so and updates on its own.
Note: A suspended server can't be started until the overdue invoice is paid. See Renewals, auto-renew and overdue invoices.
Console
Click Console in the server menu, or the Console button on the Overview while the server is running. The server must be running to use it.
There are two kinds of console. Your server has one of them:
Browser terminal (SSH): a terminal in the portal that logs in to your server over SSH.
- Click Open console.
- Log in as
rootwith your root password. Or click Use an SSH key instead and paste a private key. - Click Disconnect when you're done. Idle sessions close on their own.
Your password or key goes straight to your server and is never stored. Because this console uses SSH, it can't help if SSH itself is blocked, for example by a firewall rule.
Screen console: the server's own screen and keyboard, which works even when SSH or the network is down.
- Click Open console. This makes a private, short-lived link for your browser. Don't share it.
- Use Full screen for a bigger view, and Close console when you're done.
Warning: If the console says This server's identity has changed, that's expected right after a reinstall. If you didn't reinstall, don't continue. Open a support ticket instead.
Metrics
Where offered, Metrics in the server menu shows CPU, memory, disk and network use over the last hour, 24 hours or 7 days. The Overview also shows the last hour.
On servers without Metrics, check usage from inside the server with tools such as htop, df -h and free -h.
Activity log
Activity log lists what happened to the server and who did it, such as restarts, password changes and reinstalls.
